The Kenwood DMR series of mobile and portable radios has earned a strong reputation as a cost-effective, dependable communications solution for a wide range of business applications. Built for durability and designed with practical features, these radios are well suited for organizations that need reliable, efficient communication throughout daily operations. One key feature is integrated QT (Quiet Talk) and DQT (Digital Quiet Talk) signaling in analog mode, which allows users to communicate within a specific group while reducing unwanted traffic from other users sharing the same channel. This helps create a more focused communication environment, minimizing distractions and improving workplace productivity.
Kenwood DMR radios also offer excellent operational flexibility. They support multiple communication modes, including analog simplex for direct radio-to-radio communication, analog repeater operation for extended coverage, DMR simplex for digital direct communication, and DMR repeater operation for wider range and improved clarity. This versatility makes them a strong fit for many commercial and institutional environments. On large golf courses, they help groundskeepers and staff coordinate efficiently across expansive areas. In hotels and movie theaters, they keep management, security, and operations teams connected so they can respond quickly to guest needs or unexpected issues. Retail settings, furniture stores, and wholesale warehouses also benefit from fast, reliable communication, especially in large facilities where direct voice communication is not practical.
The Kenwood DMR series is equally valuable in recreational and public-facing venues such as bowling alleys, gun ranges, and go-kart tracks, where staff must coordinate safety, scheduling, and customer service. Schools, universities, and other educational institutions rely on these radios for campus security, maintenance, and facilities management. Construction sites also depend on them to keep teams connected across noisy, active, and often widely dispersed work areas.
It is important to note that Kenwood DMR radios operate on licensed radio frequencies, which are regulated by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the United States. To use these radios legally and help prevent interference with other radio users, organizations and individuals must obtain the appropriate FCC license. This licensing process ensures that radio operations remain compliant and reduces the risk of signal conflicts with other licensed users.
In summary, the Kenwood DMR series combines affordability, reliability, durability, and advanced functionality in a communications platform that supports a diverse range of businesses and institutions. With flexible operating modes, dependable performance, and features designed to improve day-to-day coordination, Kenwood DMR radios remain a trusted choice for organizations that need clear and efficient communication.

Up to two simultaneous subscriber calls can be supported in a 12.5KHz channel without requiring a base station or repeater. See article on Battery Care for information regarding battery ratings and capacity. For a discussion on the distance the radio will communicate, please see How Far Will My Radio Talk?
The TK-D740HV & D840HU mobile radios are Kenwood’s entry into the DMR marketplace. The radios are packed with features which make these radios a great value as well as excellent performers. The radios has a sleek design that is built to be rugged, meet the MIL-STD C/D/E/F/G standards for ruggedness and are IP54 rated for dust and water protection, making them more than capable of withstanding harsh operating conditions.
The radios operate both analog FM and digital DMR two-slot TDMA Tier II which covers licensed conventional systems. By operating with 2-slot TDMA, the radios have great spectral efficiency by providing two audio channels in a single 12.5KHz channel. In direct mode, the radio can operate both time slots to support two conversations which cannot be done by MotoTrbo.
The radios include features such as 2 digit LED channel display with brightness control, 9 programmable function keys, clear & powerful audio to deliver great intelligibility with the AMBE+2 vocoder that accurately replicates natural human speech nuances for superior voice quality, voice announcement, multiple languages, 70MHz bandwidth, external D-sub 15 pin accessory connector, 4 watt receive audio, external speaker jack, single zone scanning, horn alert / PA function, ignition sensing, minimum volume, selective call alert LED, late entry, analog signaling 39 QT (CTCSS) / 168 DQT (DCSS) codes, compandor per channel and squelch level setting.
The NX-1200 & NX-1300 basic radios operate 2 digital modes which include NXDN and DMR. Both of the digital modes can be programmed into the radio at a given time along with analog FM. This provides for versatile operation of the radio and an easy migration path for a user to start purchasing digital radios while continuing to operate analog until the majority of the fleet radios are compatible with digital operation. At that point, the balance of the radios can be decommissioned and additional radios can be purchased to be fully operational with digital NXDN or DMR.
