The Kenwood DMR series of mobile and portable radios has become a cost-effective choice for radios in a variety of business applications.  These radios have features including built in QT / DQT in analog mode which is used to listen to your group of radios without having to listen to other companies sharing the same channel.  The radios are capable of analog simplex, analog repeater, DMR simplex and DMR repeater operation which is used for facilities such as golf courses, hotels, movie theaters, furniture stores, bowling alleys, gun ranges, go kart racing, wholesale warehouse operations, schools or construction sites.  These radios operate on licensed frequencies and require the user to obtain an FCC license for legal operation.

ANALOG FM AND DMR RADIOS

TK-D240V VHF & TK-D340U UHF Portable Radio

The TK-D240V & TK-D340U are Kenwood’s DMR digital portable radios.  This radio is ergonomically designed, has minimal weight and is tough enough to comply with MIL-STD and IP54/55 environmental standards.  Features include 5 watt VHF and 4 watt UHF output, 2 zones / 16 channels per zone, audio power of 1 watt, battery saver function, monitor, late entry, key lock, FleetSync II, per channel compandor, squelch level setting, intrinsically safe option, 70MHz bandwidth, scanning, 2 programmable buttons, 39 QT (CTCSS) tones, 168 DQT (DCSS) codes, 11.5 hours use on KNB-45L battery at 5-5-90 duty cycle.  Radio is capable of both analog and DMR digital TDMA operation and can automatically switch between digital DMR and analog FM operation.  Up to two simultaneous subscriber calls can be supported in a 12.5KHz channel without requiring a base station or repeater.  See article on Battery Care for information regarding battery ratings and capacity.  For a discussion on the distance the radio will communicate, please see How Far Will My Radio Talk?

The TK-D740HV & D840HU mobile radios are Kenwood’s entry into the DMR marketplace.  The radios are packed with features which make these radios a great value as well as excellent performers.  The radios has a sleek design that is built to be rugged, meet the MIL-STD C/D/E/F/G standards for ruggedness and are IP54 rated for dust and water protection, making them more than capable of withstanding harsh operating conditions.

The radios operate both analog FM and digital DMR two-slot TDMA Tier II which covers licensed conventional systems.  By operating with 2-slot TDMA, the radios have great spectral efficiency by providing two audio channels in a single 12.5KHz channel.  In direct mode, the radio can operate both time slots to support two conversations which cannot be done by MotoTrbo.

NX-1200 & 1300 Portable Basic RadioThe NX-1200 & NX-1300 basic radios operate 2 digital modes which include NXDN and DMR.  Both of the digital modes can be programmed into the radio at a given time along with analog FM.  This provides for versatile operation of the radio and an easy migration path for a user to start purchasing digital radios while continuing to operate analog until the majority of the fleet radios are compatible with digital operation.  At that point, the balance of the radios can be decommissioned and additional radios can be purchased to be fully operational with digital NXDN or DMR.
